Summer Hair Care Tips For Natural Hair

Summer is here and we are all ready for the cookouts, pool parties, sundresses and more! But, before you head to the streets... take a moment to reflect on your summer hair care routine. If it's not working for you sis, most likely it's time to change it up. Below are a few tips on how to affectively care for you hair this summer!

Summer Hair Care Tips

1. Switch to lighter products:

During the winter we tend to use heavier products to combat the extreme cold our hair faces. Now that its summer, some of these products can be too heavy and weigh down our hair. Try ditching the heavy creams and switch to lighter leave in and stylers such as our Groovy Hair Smoothie - Styling Cream. This will keep your hair moisturized without weighing it down.

2. Choose your styles wisely:

We all love blowouts, but trust me our homegirl Summer does NOT! Many of us tend to get blowouts in the Fall/Winter because it is easier to maintain. In the summer we have extreme hot and humid days, which our natural hair does not like. This will require you to put more heat on your hair, which results in more damage. So instead of a blowout, try a different protective style such as bantu knots or box braids.

3. Use a sulfate free shampoo:

During the summer we tend to wash our hair more due to excess sweat, swimming at the pool, working out, etc. Because of this a sulfate free shampoo should be used such as our No Tress-Passing - Cleansing Shampoo. This is perfect for cleansing your hair and scalp while keeping your Opulent strands moisturized.

4. Keep your strands moisturized:

During the summer, the sun and heat can strip moisture away from your hair. Swimming in chlorine and shampooing more often makes it worse. Use a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner at least twice a week. Also, make sure you are deep conditioning WEEKLY. Our Hit The Brakes On The Break - Strengthening Collection is perfect for healing, strengthening, and moisturizing your hair to prevent breakage and damage.

5. Take extra precautions when swimming:

It's summer so that means it's pool time! While the pool is lovely and a great way to cool off the chlorine isn't so great for our hair. Chlorine tends to dry hair out and cause it to become brittle and break off. To prevent this, try wearing a swimming cap, but if you insist on wearing your hair out try coating your hair with an oil such as our Oil for Your Turmoil - Growth Serum. This will help protect your hair from the chlorine and limit the amount it absorbs. Also, make sure you are deep conditioning after every time you swim.

Now that you have the 411 on how to keep you natural hair healthy this Summer...OFF TO THE STREETS YOU GO!
